City officials of Santa Cruz advise on next storm preparations

City officials of Santa Cruz advise on next storm preparations.

Santa Cruz city officials said Given the National Weather Service prediction of a Flash Flood Watch beginning late today through early Friday morning, the city of Santa Cruz advises that all residents prepare now for intense rain and possible flooding.

According to city officials the community has prepared for the recent series of storms with few issues reported.

City officials said they continue inspecting and cleaning the storm water collection and pumping system with extra efforts focused on the areas prone to flooding and the community is advised to prepare their personal property and family for heavy rainfall.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions are favorable for sudden onset intense rain and localized flooding, according to officials.

“Residents should be aware of how quickly conditions can change. Although the San Lorenzo River is currently well below flood stage, everyone should stay away from the river levee,” said city of Santa Cruz Emergency Services Manager Paul Horvat.

City advisers said residents in low-lying areas should prepare with sandbags and have an emergency plane in place. Free sandbags and a detailed storm preparation brochure in English and Spanish can be downloaded from the city’s website.

Free sandbags can be picked up by residents in two locations:

Fire Administration Office, 230 Walnut Ave.

Monday-Thursday: 8 a.m.-12 p.m., 1-4 p.m.

Corporation Yard, 1125 River St. Office 6A

Monday-Friday: 8 a.m.-12 p.m., 1-4 p.m.

Free sand to fill the bags will be provided at Harvey West Park, 326 Evergreen Street at the entrance to the parks yard opposite Evergreen Cemetery.

Officials said residents are advised to bring a shovel.
