UPDATE: Part of Highway 17 reopened after mudslides
UPDATE 2/7/17 6:00 p.m.: Crews say one southbound lane of Highway 17 at Bear Creek Road has reopened to drivers.
UPDATE 2/7/17 4:05 p.m.: Highway 17 is closed in two locations Tuesday afternoon because of two different mudslides, according to Caltrans.
Crews said the highway is still closed in both directions at Vine Hill Rd. Northbound traffic is being diverted at Granite Creek Rd. in Scotts Valley and southbound traffic is being turned around at Summit Rd.
Southbound Highway 17 is also closed at Bear Creek Rd. in Los Gatos. Crews expect that portion of the highway to be open around 8 p.m.
UPDATE 2/7/17 11:13 a.m.: California Highway Patrol reports Highway 17 is completely shut down on both northbound and southbound sides because of a major mudslide covering the northbound side of the road.
Officers say the southbound side is closed because the slide is still moving and there’s concern it will spread.
CHP said a man was driving on the northbound side as the hillside came down, flipping his car to the southbound side of the highway. Officers said he was not hurt during the incident.
KION has a crew on the way.PREVIOUS STORY: Northbound lanes are blocked on Highway 17 just north of Scotts Valley because of a mudslide, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers said the mudslide is at Vine Hill Rd. and northbound traffic is being diverted off the highway at Granite Creek Rd.
There isn’t an estimated time when northbound lanes will re-open but Caltrans crews are on the way to assess the damage.
