Special Super Bowl Sunday DUI enforcement campaign

Law enforcement officers across the Central Coast are encouraging people to celebrate safely on Super Bowl Sunday.

The Salinas Police Department is teaming up with the California Office of Traffic Safety and officers across the state for a special “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign.

Salinas Police will have extra officers and DUI patrols on the lookout for drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol during and following the game.

“Designate a sober driver, use public transportation, call a taxi or ride share program, but don’t get behind the wheel,” said Salinas Police Sergeant Gerry Ross.

“Volunteer to be a designated driver to help your family and friends get home safely,” said Rhonda Craft, Director of the Office of Traffic Safety.

Salinas Police are encouraging drivers to download the Designated Driver VIP or DDVIP which is a free mobile app for Android or iPhone.

The app helps find nearby bars and restaurants that feature free incentives for the designated sober driver.

The California Highway Patrol is also encouraging people to designate a sober driver for game day.

According to the CHP, one person was killed in an alcohol-involved crash during last year’s Super Bowl. 52 others were hurt on California roadways.

That same day, officers made 360 DUI arrests.

If you do suspect a drunk driver call 9-1-1 and be prepared to give the vehicle’s description, location, license plate number and direction of travel.
