Post-holiday sales and returns keep stores busy

UPDATE 12/26/16 7:16 PM: It started with Black Friday. Then, there was Cyber Monday. Today, on the day after Christmas, shoppers were again looking for deals and returning unwanted gifts.

Returning items can be a hassle, but retailers say, if you’re patient and have your receipt, the process will go a lot easier.

Summer Meyers is general manager at Saks Fifth Avenue, Off Fifth at the Gilroy Premium Outlets. Part of her job is overseeing the return process. She and her employees catch people year-round trying to return items that shouldn’t be returned. She says having that receipt is key to getting in and out of the return line quick.

” The best practice would be to have some proof purchase so either a gift receipt, the original receipt” says Meyer. “If they were the person to buy it, credit card it was purchased on but as long as they come in with something we can get them in and out just as quick as they came in.

While the day after Christmas is one of the busiest days for retailers, it won’t end today.

“We anticipate it will probably last through mid-week and then gear up a little bit more for the actual New Years coming up says Robert Earnest General Manager of Gilroy Premium Outlets. “Then we’ll see a little return to traffic but we’ll be pretty busy for a long time.”

PREVIOUS STORY: Now that Christmas shopping is over, after-Christmas shopping can begin. At the Gilroy Premium Outlets, Monday was one of the busiest days of the holiday season.

For some shoppers, it’s a chance to spend those new gift cards or take advantage of one-day sale promotions.

For others, it’s about returning items that weren’t wanted or didn’t fit. Store managers told KION’s Zach Fuentes that a sales receipt of some kind–the original, credit card or gift receipt–will speed the return process.

“The best practice would be to have some proof of purchase,” said Summer Meyers, general manager of Saks Off Fifth. “As long as they come in with something, we can get them in and out just as quick as they came in.”

Tonight at 6 p.m., look for Zach’s report on the crowded malls and busy stores that follow the holiday.
