Monterey church finds new home for unclaimed cross

An unclaimed cross is being given a new home at St. John’s Chapel in Monterey.

According to city manager Mike McCarthy, the cross was originally found at Del Monte Beach earlier this year and was kept in storage since March.

The city said St. John’s Chapel expressed interest in accepting the cross and putting it in the middle of the parish parking lot on Mark Thomas Drive.

On Tuesday, that request was granted and the cross was delivered.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the cross,” said Reverend Robert M. Ott, Rector of St. John’s. “It will be installed in an area accessible to the public at any time.”The cross is made of metal and is 10 feet tall.

“We are happy to have found a home for the cross, and appreciate Reverend Ott’s leadership in finding a suitable location on the church’s property,” said City Manager Mike McCarthy.
