Rockslides and mudslides damage Santa Cruz County roads
A mudslide in Soquel took out a driveway and damaged part of a home on Glen Haven Road Saturday.
The street is down to one lane while repairs are being made. Crews with Santa Cruz County Public Works are still estimating when they will be finished.
The same day, a rock slide in Boulder Creek trapped people at Vajrapani Institute on Kings Creek Road. On Monday, some of those visitors were finally making their way home.
“My daughter has come down from Berkeley to rescue us. We have to come back down to get in the car,” said Vajrapani Institute visitor Nancy Leech.
Contractors hired by the county say before they clear the road, they have to secure boulders above the fallen ones. The contractors fear the boulders could come down at a moment’s notice.
Though the blocked road was an inconvenience for many, staff at the retreat say they’re prepared to handle a situation where they may be trapped for long periods of time.
“We have plenty of supplies with a very large kitchen with a lot of supplies and food and ample accommodations, so people are very comfortable there. Tea and coffee and all,” said Kelsey Grimsley, community relations coordinator with Vajrapani.
Though the boulders blocking the road are massive, contractors believe they can break them up. The county is hoping that the boulders are gone in a week.
