Highway 1 in Big Sur back open after rock slides

UPDATE 12/9/16 9:44 AM: Cal Trans reports Highway 1 is back open after several rock slides caused a closure.

CalTrans crews are gearing up to reopen a section of Highway 1 in Big Sur area after several rock slides were reported Thursday night.

The spokesperson for CalTrans, Colin Jones, said drivers will have access to the 45-mile section between Coastal Gallery in Big Sur and Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County, before 10 a.m. Friday.

Crews were on scene early Friday morning assessing the damage and clearing the roadway.

Jones said it’s normal to see rock slides in this area after a night of rain and asks drivers to “drive slow and be patient when driving through the area.”
