CHP: Maximum enforcement during Thanksgiving weekend
The California Highway Patrol will be out in force this Thanksgiving weekend. Its annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period runs throughout the state from 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23 , through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, November 27 .
The CHP will also join a nationwide effort to focus special attention on Interstate 40, the 2,500-mile highway that stretches from North Carolina to Barstow, in Southern California.
The campaign, dubbed the “Interstate 40 Challenge: The Drive Toward Zero Fatalities,” encourages law enforcement agencies in seven states to assign an officer every 20 miles along the I-40 corridor on Wednesday and Sunday , the Thanksgiving holiday’s busiest travel days.
“Accepting the challenge and working with our law enforcement partners and the public has proven very successful in years past,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “California did not experience a single fatality on I-40 during past challenges. With the public’s cooperation, the CHP will continue to promote a safe traveling season during the Thanksgiving holiday.”
Interstate 40 traverses California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
