DMV offers special designation to veterans

In the past year, the California Department of Motor Vehicles has issued more than 31,000 special driver licenses or ID cards to state veterans. The cards and licenses feature a designation identifying the bearer as a veteran.

The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) said the designation provides a simple and official way to confirm military service. In addition to honoring veterans for their service, the cards can be used at businesses offering discounts on holidays such as Veterans Day.

Since the program was launched last Veterans day, more than 38,000 California veterans have begun the application process.

Applicants need a military discharge certificate (DD214) and a completed and stamped Veteran Status Verification Form (available from CalVet) to apply for the special designation. Completed applications and a $5.00 fee must be submitted to a DMV office.
