Two killed in car accident near Gonzales

UPDATE 11/8/16 5:15 PM: California Highway Patrol released the names of both people killed in a crash early Saturday morning on Highway 101 near the Old Stage Rd. overpass.

Officers said driver Antonio Cortez, 40, from Nebraska and Jose Guerrero, 42, of Salinas, died on scene after their car hit a guardrail head on.

Alcohol may have been a factor during the crash, according to CHP.

PREVIOUS STORY: Two people were killed in a weekend crash near Gonzales.

The California Highway Patrol says it happened Saturday on Highway 101, north of the Old Stage Road over crossing.

Two men were driving southbound, when the driver hit the guard rail head on. The guardrail went through the windshield and impacted the passenger’s head.

The driver was ejected and both died at the scene. CHP says alcohol may have been a factor.
