2017 Amgen bike race will skip the Central Coast

Next year’s Amgen Tour of California professional bicycle race will not be making any stops in Monterey or Santa Cruz counties.

Race organizers announced the 2017 route Wednesday morning. The race will be held May 11-20, 2017 and cover 600 miles from Sacramento to Pasadena.

No cities in Monterey or Santa Cruz counties were chosen as host sites for any of the race’s 7 stages. In 2016, the race’s fourth stage from Morro Bay to Monterey County finished on the track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

“I feel very confident they had such a great time when they were here this past season that they’ll definitely be back,” said David Hart, Public Relations Manager with Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

And local business around downtown Monterey that get a boost by these types of events are thankful the tourism industry is year round on the Peninsula.

“We feed off it and rely on it heavily. Anything involved, Concourse, races, AT&T, anything we can get in this area impacts us,” said Sean Wall, Restaurant Manager of Peter B’s Brewpub.
