Need a place to camp this weekend?
From pristine beaches to famous raceways, Monterey County has quickly become a vacation destination for many.
“We see over 4.5 million overnight visitors each year, contributing 2.7 billion dollars to our local economy and supporting 24-thousand jobs. It’s a big important part of our economy here,” said Convention & Visitor Bureau President Tammy Blount.
And for the long weekend many will enjoy the Central Coast living outside.
“We get a lot of cyclists, a lot of travelers, we get a lot of Europeans coming through. It’s a good way for people to see Monterey without people spending a lot of money on a hotel,” said Veterans Memorial Park Attendant Tim Bailey.
The Monterey County Convention and Visitors Bureau Has come up with a campsite top ten list.
“One of the things that makes our county such a great destination is that it’s so diverse. Big Sur is so popular, but people come and travel throughout the county,” said Blount.
The Veteran’s Memorial Park claims the third spot on the list.
“We’re on the slopes of huckleberry hill and a lot of people will hike up there, many will also walk to town because it’s only a mile and a quarter away,” said Bailey.
It’s a first come, first serve park so you better move quickly.
“Weekends will fill up and July 4 th will be very, very busy. It’s good to come early,” said Bailey.
Another close option is the Laguna Seca Recreation Area, which is number seven on the list.
“This particular park Laguna Seca is most well-known for Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca of course, but we also have camping here. We Have RV camping and tent camping. We also have a rifle and pistol range,” said Monterey County Parks Special Events Manager, Lavonne Chin.
Each campground throughout the County has different policies so make sure you know before you go.
“You want to make sure you’re camping legally, so don’t start a fire, and pick up your trash so it’s left pristine for the people that come after you,” said Blount.
