Parents hold community meeting after graphic ‘rape and kill’ letter surfaces at Scotts Valley High
UPDATE 6/23/2016 10:15 PM: Dozens of parents gathered at Bruno’s BBQ in Scotts Valley Thursday after a male student was allowed to return to campus following a handwritten letter police said he wrote that threatened to rape and kill specific students and teachers.
Cameras were not allowed in the meeting because one of the girls named in the letter spoke. She said, “the letter has drastically changed my life.”
The letter was five pages long. In it, the boy wrote about raping and killing 21 students and four teachers.
After the letter was reported to the administrators, the boy remained on campus for the last three days of school.
Police said he was placed in a separate room for that time but parents said more should have been done and now they’re questioning school leadership.
“We have a voice by the power of numbers and I think that a lot of people are unhappy with the way the situation was dealt (with) and there’s got to be some changes in policies and procedures,” said parent Robert Aldana.
The school district responded earlier this week with a statement to the Scotts Valley community. Superintendent Penny Weaver wrote, “I am writing to confirm that the district is and has been, actively engaged in the investigation of this matter including the implementation of an assessment to determine if there is a threat to student and staff safety.”
Dozens of parents said they will attend the school board meeting on June 28th.
