Gonzales man accused of murdering mother in her home

A 79-year-old woman was killed early Saturday morning in her own home on Venice Way in Gonzales, police said.

Police said Maria Rangel Arias was found with a severe cut on her neck and she later died, despite attempts by medics to save her.

A son of Arias, who also lives at the home, told police he had assaulted his mother. Gonzales Police said Juan Manuel Garcia Rangel, 47, was arrested and charged with murder and felony elder abuse.

Rangel was taken to the Monterey County Jail.
