Two dead after early morning crash on Highway 183
UPDATE 6/17/16 12:48 PM: Two people were killed after a crash on Highway 183 early Friday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.
Officers said Fabian Sanchez III, 30 of Salinas, was driving a Hummer southbound on Highway 183, south of Cooper Rd. and crossed over into the northbound lane.
That’s when officers said the Hummer side swiped a Mercury Saber – no one in that car was hurt. Sanchez continued northbound and crashed head on into a Nissan Altima, driven by Amada Hernandez, 49 of Salinas, CHP said.
Officers said Hernandez died at the scene and Sanchez died at Natividad Medical Center. Sanchez’ passenger, Maria Lopez, 21 of Salinas, suffered major injuries, CHP said.
Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in this crash. Cooper Rd. was closed from about 4:10 AM to about 8:30AM.

It happened around 4:00 a.m. Friday morning just north of San Jon Road.
A man driving a Hummer southbound on Highway 183 crossed over into oncoming traffic, sideswiping one vehicle before crashing head-on into another.
The woman involved in the head-on collision died on scene. The man in the Hummer died from his injuries at a local hospital.
According to officers on scene, they believe alcohol may have been a factor.
All traffic is being diverted away from the area. Look for alternate routes.
