Special Olympics Torch making its way to Davis

The Special Olympics Summer Games brings together more than 700 athletes to compete, but today it’s not their athletic abilities that will be tested, rather California’s finest.

“It starts in Watsonville and it stays lit through the county and it will actually transfer to other cities along the way,” said Scotts Valley Detective Michael Birley.

After Watsonville the torch will pass through Rio Del Mar, then Capitola, Santa Cruz, and Scotts valley.

“Each agency runs a different route and longer distance. We are going to get the transfer about two o’clock in the afternoon. We are probably one of the shortest in the county because our City is so small,” said Birley.

According to Detective Birley the torch run is only part of what they do.

“The thing that’s dear to my heart is when we go to the events and place the medals around the athletes, that’s the thing that gets me,” said Birley.

The torch run will begin today at 7:00 AM.
