Vigil for Orlando shooting victims in Marina

UPDATE 6/13/2016 10:15 PM: It was standing room only at the Epiphany Lutheran & Episcopal Church in Marina Monday night.

“What we want to do is say we’re all one human family and be here together and grieve for and with each other,” said Steven Goings.

Pride organizations across Monterey County in partnership with the church, hosted the vigil to honor the victims shot and killed at a gay club in Orlando over the weekend.

“I don’t think that healing happens individually. Grieving I think should be a public process that’s why we have funerals,” said Goings.

Before entering the church, people signed a rainbow flag with messages of love and hope. Organizers said it will be sent to the GLBTQ community in Orlando.

“Anytime something like this happens it brings a whole community together because even though it happened so far away it really could happen anywhere,” said Jen Crompton.

City and county leaders also spoke, as well as a representative from the Muslim community.

“We’re all here for each other. There is community here on the peninsula and that there’s strength and that we move on together and that there’s a lot of love other there for this community specifically,” said Crompton.
