California primary: Trump wins, Clinton & Sanders await results
UPDATE 6/7/2016 9:00 PM: Donald Trump has won the California presidential primary.
UPDATE 6/7/2016 7:55 PM: Hillary Clinton sailed to victory in the New Jersey Democratic primary Tuesday, and with it, claimed the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Clinton becomes the first woman to lead a major party’s bid for the White House.
Donald Trump won the Republican primaries in Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota. Trump will now go on to the national convention in July with more than enough delegates to become the official nominee.
ORIGINAL STORY: California voters are going to the polls amid widespread media reports that both parties’ Presidential primary races are all but decided.
Donald Trump became the presumptive Republican nominee after winning the Indiana primary election in early May. His victory forced his remaining rivals from the race and ended talk of a potentially contested GOP convention.
On Monday, Associated Press and CNN reported that Democrat Hillary Clinton had reached the magic number of 2,383 delegates needed for the nomination after receiving the support of several super delegates. Bernie Sanders, who has campaigned throughout California, dismissed naming Clinton as the nominee as a “rush to judgement.”
Six states are holding their primaries June 7. The first state to report results will be New Jersey.
If Sanders were to win California, it would strengthen his argument for continuing his campaign all the way to the Democratic convention in Philadelphia. Should Clinton win, it will put an exclamation point on her victory and increase pressure on Sanders to quit the race.
KION will have complete election results throughout the evening, starting at 8:00 p.m..
