Osio Theater reopens
Monterey movie fans are buzzing following the grand reopening of the Osio
Theater.
“It’s just marvelously, marvelously, marvelously,” said movie fan Dorothy Finell.
When the theater closed in July of 2016, Finell and her friend
Alyson Malek said they were devastated.
“It was like we lost a dear friend when it (the theater) went out,” said Finell
That feeling changed when the friends got the news that the theater was
reopening.
“I wanted to make sure I was here on the first day for the very first movie,” said Malek.
Bringing back the theater wasn’t easy.
“It’s been really long. We have done just about everything ourselves,” said co-owner Shanneen Kirkpatrick.
Kirkpatrick also told KION that in just the last few months she and the other two owners have repainted, replaced old seats, upgraded the theater to digital and added new concessions.
“We want make it fit in line with what our customers want to see and what they want to eat,” said Kirkpatrick.
The theater was able to make many of these changes with the help of more than 600 backers of a Kickstarter campaign to save the Osio. In total donors raised more than $75,000. Malek was one of the donors.
“As soon as I found out that they had a Kickstarter, I contributed and I have been following the progress.” Said Malek.
Beyond the cosmetic improvements, Kirkpatrick said they wanted to create a better movie theater experience.
“That is really our ultimate goal,” said Kirkpatrick. “We want to a place where people can come and they can see the films they want to see and that are difficult to find anywhere else,” added Kirkpatrick.
