Investigator: no policy violations in Salinas Police gun thefts

An independent investigator says no policy violations were committed by Salinas Police personnel whose guns were stolen recently.

Between March and May of this year, there were three incidents in which Salinas Police Chief Kelly McMillin and two officers had guns and other property stolen from their vehicles.

Salinas City Attorney Chris Callihan retained an outside firm to investigate and determine if the Chief or either of the officers had violated Police Department policies in the manner in which they kept the guns in their vehicles. Callihan announced the results of the investigationFriday.

In a press release, Callihan said, “I’m satisfied with the results of the investigation. At the same time, we all understand and share the community’s concern over the risks arising from these three incidents. We are going to review existing policies and search for ways we might be able to reduce the chances of something like this happening again.”

None of the stolen guns have been recovered. Investigations into the thefts are on-going.
