More church vandalism in Santa Cruz
The Santa Cruz Police Department is investigating potentially six cases of church vandalism. The department said officers are increasing patrols in the area until the vandal(s) are caught.
Over the weekend, Santa Cruz Police responded to the first two incidents of vandalism. At both Holy Cross Church on High Street and Calvary Episcopal Church on Center Street, light blue paint was splattered near the front doors with hand smears.
In a press release, the department wrote, “Holy Cross Church and Calvary Episcopal Church have historical and cultural significance to our community. These acts of vandalism are offensive and disrespectful. Both cases are considered a hate crime because the vandalism was targeted at a place of worship.”
Now, the department is dealing with more reports of similar vandalism. First Congregational on High Street and Messiah Lutheran Church on High Street fell victim to similar crimes with splattered light blue paint, and the department is investigating two more incidents.
In all cases, there are no words or messages in the vandalism. The department is asking the community to step forward and share any surveillance or information if possible.
