Surfers take on powerful waves at 2016 Titans of Mavericks

Today is the day. Some of the world’s top surfers are up at Half Moon Bay, challenging Mother Earth at the Mavericks surf break.

Red Bull is streaming the contest live. Several of the surfers have said the waves aren’t crazy big, but they’re still very powerful. Mark Healey, who can hold his breathe for 4-5 minutes, was held under for quite a while and Ken Collins ruptured his eardrum.

Fans who aren’t out on charter boats are catching the action at local shops, restaurants and bars.

KION’s Brandon Castillo is at a viewing party at Mavericks Surf Company. He’ll have more on the competition tonight.
