Heightened security at the Super Bowl takes a lot of coordination

Super Bowl 50 spectators will face long lines and lots of surveillance cameras this Sunday. Security is a priority, and there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into making sure everyone is safe.

Federal, state and local agencies are in place at Levi’s Stadium, keeping security tight for the main event.

“We have a very robust security plan for Super Bowl 50,” said Santa Clara Police Department Lt. Kurt Clarke. “It’s been two years in the making for planning, so we’re ready to go and excited.”

Security does not stop at Levi’s Stadium.

About five miles south, law enforcement along with federal and state agencies have joined forces to create one voice for all things safety.

“Today is one of our big days of looking at it and saying how are we going to handle the next 48 hours,” said Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety Captain Jeffrey Hunter.

For added security, the Santa Clara Police Department has set up a temporary Joint Information Center.

“So that all the partners have a means of communicating with one another,” said Hunter.

Through an enhanced web portal, more than 80 agencies are gathering critical information and sharing documents to release updates and alerts to locals through social media and a system called Nixle.

“It’s direct messaging,” said Clarke. “We’re pushing information out that folks need to know about for Super Bowl. Traffic information and safety information. It’s an excellent public safety system.”

To receive alerts, text SB50 to 888777 or follow @scsb50 on Twitter.

Authorities are asking spectators to do more than just use their smartphones.

They’re trying to get the word out, “If you see something suspicious, say something.”

“Don’t sit in the back of your mind and think, ah, should I report that?” No. Just go ahead and call 911 and report that because we’re all in this together,” said Clarke.
