6 Injured, 1 in critical condition after crash on Highway 101 in Gilroy
UPDATE 1/30/16, 2:31 p.m: Gilroy officers said a four vehicle crash that started as a police chase, shut down Highway 101 for several hours and sent six people to the hospital.
It all started when police attempted to stop a speeding driver near Chestnut Street around 2:57 a.m.
Police said the driver was able to get away. But moments later, officers got a report that the suspects car had crashed through a fence on E. Ninth Street and entered the southbound lanes of Highway 101, where he hit three cars.
On scene, police found two suspects on the northbound lane. They are not sure if they were ejected or if they were attempting to run off.
One of the suspects is under critical condition. The other was listed in serious but stable condition.
Four other people involved in the crash were also taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
This incident is still under investigation, and police are still not sure if drugs or alcohol were involved.
UPDATE 1/30/16 10:24 AM: CHP reports the northbound side of HIghway 101 was opened just after 10 AM. The southbound side is still closed for a police investigation.
PREVIOUS STORY: Northbound and southbound sides of Highway 101 are shut down between 10th St. and Leavesley Rd. in Gilroy Saturday morning because of a police investigation, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Dispatchers confirm the Gilroy Police Department is investigating, but details surrounding the incident aren’t available yet.
The closure began at about 6:30AM and CHP said officers don’t know when the highway will re-open.
