Flooding impacts Central Coast community

The rain on the Central Coast caused several road closures due to flooding.

The road in and out of the Pajaro Dunes community was under about 2-feet of water on Monday because of the heavy rains and high surf.

That road is also near agricultural fields making it prone to flooding because of the drainage systems.

The Pajaro Dunes community is used to flooding, but some residents said they have never seen it this bad and they are frustrated by the problems it is causing.

“It’s like a political nightmare and the roads are just a waste, there is no way you can get in and out of here,” said resident Duane Hallof.

“You just have to strategize. Everybody is on their own and they have to strategize to get their own thing going to get themselves out,” said Mark Cullivan.

Tow trucks were busy towing cars and trucks most of the day Monday.

“I know it’s hard this time because the whole southern area lost their electricity, so they’re pretty desperate to get out. I haven’t seen the flatbed trucks before, but that’s a good idea. Last year we had to rent a truck to get in and then getting out was no problem, but this time we were caught by surprise,” said Property Owner Krissa Baylor.

The water is slowly draining from the roadway, but not fast enough as more rain is on the way.
