Salinas police investigate city’s first fatal shooting of the year

The Salinas Police Department is investigating its first homicide of the year.

Officers responded to a report of a victim of a shooting on the 1000 block of Atlantic Street just after 9 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival officers found a 23-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was pronounced dead about an hour later at a hospital.

It appears the man, who lived in the area, was walking on the sidewalk when he was approached by an unknown number of people, police said. Multiple shots were fired and the victim was struck.

Police add several people were in the area but no witnesses have come forward at this time.

The motive of the shooting is unknown.
