New mattress recycle law prompts free dumping plan in Santa Cruz County

Santa Cruz County is urging residents to properly throw out old mattresses and box springs, following a new state law which took effect at the end of December.

The state now requires an $11 fee when a mattress is sold to pay for a new recycle program, following Connecticut and Rhode Island which both have a similar law.

Santa Cruz County announced it has two locations where mattresses can be dumped for free.

NewsChannel 5’s Paul Dudley will have more on this story at 5PM.
