NTSB releases preliminary report of plane crash the killed Gilroy family
A preliminary report of a plane crash near Bakersfield that killed a Gilroy family of five last month has been released.
The Piper PA-32RT from San Jose was headed to Clark County in Las Vegas when it crashed in Bakersfield on Dec. 19.
On board the plane were pilot Jason Price, 42, his wife Olga Price and his three children.
According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the pilot was warned of moderate to heavy precipitation.
An air traffic controller asked price to make a right turn to avoid traffic but instead he made an ascending left turn, NTSB officials said. Price was asked for a second time to make a right turn but failed to do so. The NTSB said two mayday calls came shortly after.
The NTSB said the plane broke apart in the air some of it landed in an almond orchard near Bakersfield in Kern County. Much of it was spread out about a half-mile long, NTSB officials said.
