Tassajara Fire mudslide concerns

People living in Carmel Valley are facing the possibility of mudslides as El Nio continues to bring more rain.

“They are at risk anyway in any given year, but you certainly have an increased risk due to the decreased soil stability,” Cal Fire’s Jonathan Pangburn said.

Cal Fire says heavy El Nio rain could cause mudslides in the area burned by the Tassajara Fire, at the base of a hill that was charred by the flames.

Emily McCabe and her husband Jim live on Tassajara Road, at the base of a hill that was charred by the flames.

“You never know, nature is mysterious,” McCabe said.

But she added she feels prepared,” “Just having basic supplies ready, like in case the power goes out for a long period of time,” she said. “And you know, just having a contact plan in place.”

The fire burned 12 home and over 1,000 acres in September. It was one of the biggest fires to hit the Central Coast in recent history.

Fire crews recommend residents stock up on sandbags.
