Cool beach find! Pelagic red crabs
El Nio is bringing more than just rain this week; it’s also bringing some cool marine life closer to shore.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium says Pelagic red crabs have turned up along local beaches as well as the Aquarium’s Great Tide Pool.
The red crabs are usually associated with the warm ocean waters caused by El Nio.
Experts at the Monterey Bay Aquarium tell News Channel 5 the crabs are a tasty treat for sea life on the Central Coast.
“These red crabs are an important food source for a lot of bigger animals. They are important because these red crabs can eat plankton. They provide energy for themselves, but they are also providing energy for bigger animals,” said Dan Albro with the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
Experts don’t know how long the red crabs will be around, but say the best chance to see them is right around high tide.click here for more information from the Aquarium.
