UPDATE 12/16/2015 4:50 PM: The Redding Police Department says the two children found dead in a storage facility in Redding died outside of Shasta County.
The news broke Tuesday following autopsies on the two children. Redding Police says the investigation is now in the hands of the Salinas Police Department and the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
UPDATE 12/15/2015 8:28 PM: The Redding Police Department confirmed that Tami Huntsman and Gonzalo Curiel are considered suspects in a double homicide investigation.
Police have learned that Huntsman and Curiel had custody of two children who were reported missing. They have been identified as three-year-old Delylah Tara and six-year-old Shaun Tara. According to police, it has not yet been confirmed that the two are the same children found dead in a storage unit. An autopsy is pending.
Investigators have also learned Huntsman and Curiel traveled between Salinas, Redding, Shingletown and Quincy between November 27, 2015 and December 11, 2015. Huntsman and Curiel stayed at the Motel 6 in Dunnigan on November 28, 2015.
Police have released a photo of the vehicle they were driving. Anyone with information about their activities or anything related to the case is asked to contact the Redding Police Department.
The 9-year-old victim in the case is being treated for injuries at a Sacramento area hospital.
UPDATE 12/15/2015 3:16 PM: The investigation into the deaths of two children, whose bodies were discovered in a storage unit in Redding, CA continues to unfold. The Monterey County Child Protective Services says the victims are a three-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.
Police said Tami Joy Huntsman, 39 and Gonzalo Curiel, 17, were both arrested by the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office and are charged with torture, mayhem and child abuse. Both suspects made their first court appearance on Tuesday.
Investigators said both children found dead and a 9-year-old girl lived at an apartment in the 500 block of Fremont St. in Salinas with Huntsman and Curiel and recently moved to an apartment in Quincy, CA.
Neighbors in that Salinas neighborhood said Huntsman has four kids of her own. Salinas Police said their officers are familiar with the residence.
“We have two anonymous calls to that residence,” said Police Chief Kelly McMillin. “Police officers responded on both occasions. I can’t tell you what they found or any more details but yes, we have been called to that residence in the past.”
CPS says there have been four general neglect referrals made within the last year. Neighbors were shocked over the recent revelations.
“My kid would hang out with their kid,” one woman said. “They went to the same school the same class and yes it looked suspicious at times because we didn’t see the other little kids out, so yes it looked like something was wrong but we never thought that would happen.”
Huntsman is also related to Wayne Allen Huntsman, who was accused of intentionally starting the King Fire in El Dorado County last year. That wildfire drove close 3,000 people from their homes.
Last September, NewsChannel 5 spoke with Tami Huntsman, formerly Tami Criswell, about her brother’s involvement in the King Fire. Click here for that story.
PREVIOUS STORY: Multiple law enforcement agencies including the Salinas Police Department are investigating the deaths of two children in Redding, California.
On December 11, Plumas County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tami Joy Huntsman, 39, and Gonzalo Curiel, 17. They were booked into the Plumas County Jail on charges of felony child abuse, torture and mayhem.
Redding police say the investigation led officers to the discovery of the bodies inside a storage unit in the city. The victims have not been identified. The case is being investigated as a homicide with an autopsy pending, police said.
Huntsman and Curiel are “recent residents of Salinas,” police added.
Salinas police officers spent several hours Monday searching a home on the 500 block of Fremont Street. Salinas police did confirm the search is in connection to the homicide case.
“We’ve been there for some time and how much longer we’ll be there, I’m not sure,” Salinas Police Commander Henry Gomez said. “But you know, we’re trying to be as thorough as we can to help them out. This is obviously a very serious case so we’re trying to do as much as we can.”
