Rio Del Mar homeowners clean up storm damage, bracing for next storm

UPDATE 12/15/2015 5:40:

“I mean you could really hear it. You could hear it coming, you could hear the rain just banging on the house. You know I never ever, even up in Washington State. I never ever remember it being like it was the other night,” said Resident Skip Gill.

There’s clear signs of destruction everywhere in the quiet neighborhood, that’s not so quiet anymore.

“I got a text from my daughter saying the tree had fallen down. This is just one or two branches, the branches are enormous,” said Resident Alan Henderson.

An observation that many of his neighbors now share.

“Oh boy it’s just terrible I feel so sorry for them,” said Skip Gill.

Tree companies are now busy helping those people pick up the pieces.

“I got three bids and Randy Weiss was the guy that was most helpful,” said Henderson.

“I have work all over the place. Because of the drought that encourages the limbs to snap,” said Randy.

Despite doing considerable damage, meteorologists say this storm was not anything out of the ordinary.

According to the National Weather Service it was a “typical storm” with wind speeds, reaching 33 miles per hour in Watsonville. But with another storm expected to hit this weekend, residents are taking nothing to chance.

“Everything is solid, taken care of. Nothing’s loose flopping around And nothing on the exterior. So we’re in pretty good shape I think,” said Skip Gill.

Several homeowners in Rio Del Mar saw downed trees and power lines from last weekend’s storm.

On Tuesday, NewsChannel 5 is checking in with them to see how clean up efforts are going ahead of another storm slated to move into the area this weekend.

Reporter Sophia Miraglio will have more on this story at 5 and 6.
