Coastal Kids Home Care holds car parade for children
WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) Coastal kids Home Care holds a car parade for children on Saturday for their second annual 'Crusin' for Coastal Kids Home Care'.
Over 100 cars came out for a parade in Watsonville for families and children who are mostly stuck at home because of medical reasons.
"We just thought well, 'what we can do for our families that are just scared to death this year,' and we thought, 'let's do a touch a truck in motion so it became 'Crusin for Coastal Kids,'" said Margy Mayfield, Co-founder and Executive Director of Coastal Kids Home Care.
The organization provides home care for medically fragile children that cannot leave their homes. Some are premature babies. Others have life-threatening illnesses. One mother brought her one-year-old daughter, Emma, who was born prematurely, to enjoy the parade.
"With COVID, I don't want to expose her as much as having one person come and not having her go to different doctors is a lot safer... They come to your home, so she's in the comfort of her own space with her toys," said Nancy Cosio, mother.
Although this form of medical care keeps children safe, it can be incredibly isolating and lonely. The car parade was a COVID safe event that brought social interaction for the children
"They could be with their family, be safe but have a really, basically personal parade for themselves... you name it, they came out and the kids had a ball and we caused a little traffic issue, but it was wonderful, said Mayfield.
