California’s first flu death of season reported in Santa Clara County

California Department of Public Health officials have confirmed the state’s first influenza-associated death this year.

The individual who died is a Santa Clara County resident.

Karen Smith, the state’s public health officer said the flu virus is expected to circulate at peak levels between December and April.

During the 2014-2015 influenza season, 78 flu-related deaths were reported for individuals under the age of 65. Still, health officials warn flu can cause severe illnesses across all ages.

With flu season approaching, the department recommends the annual flu vaccine for anyone six moths of age and older, including pregnant women. Common symptoms of the flu include fever, cough and or sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, chills, fatigue and body aches.
