New video prepares businesses for active shooter scenarios

A video showing an active shooter firing off in a workplace is now on the Monterey Police Department’s website.

“This is still a very safe community but we can’t let that lull us into a complacency,” said Sgt. Ethan Andrews with the Monterey Police Department. “We need to be prepared should this ever occur.”

The nearly six minute clip from the Department of Homeland Security demonstrates a simple yet effective plan should an active shooter event happen.

The steps are to run, hide and fight.

“Arm yourself with any weapons that are available to you, improvise with them,” said Andrews. “If you have to act with as much aggression as it takes to stop the suspect and commit to your actions because your life very likely depends on it.”

‘Maybe on Monday’ is a new downtown Monterey business filled with peace and treasures from around the world.

The video is intended to help retail businesses as small as this one to schools, churches, transportation centers and public gathering sights come up with a plan.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Maybe on Monday owner Maya Lama said. “I would like to know how to defend myself in case someone comes in and starts shooting up.”

The Monterey PD says the video is not just for businesses, churches and schools, but that everyone should watch it.

“We all have people that we know are in school or work in these types of locations or visit these types of locations,” said Andrews. “So I think everybody can benefit from watching this video and I encourage them to share it as well.”
