70th annual Concours d’Elegance shines in Pebble Beach

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (KION) After a week of events showcasing classic and luxury cars, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is finally here.

The Concours d’Elegance is both the grand finale and highlight of Car Week, with cars from around the world competing in the event.

This year's festivities mark the 70th anniversary of the Concours and take spectators through the event's history by exhibiting previous Best of Show winners.

"It's definitely the most prestigious Concours in the world. So the judges are looking at everything, really," said Guido Scassellati who's representing his boss 1977 Lamborghini Countach LP400 Periscopica. "Judging went well and, you know, fingers crossed, but it's really nice to be here in the first place."

The Periscopica is one of nine Lamborghini's competing in the Concours' Best of Show in the Lamborgini 50th Anniversary Class. It was specially ordered by Swedish racer Michael Noss and it's one of two cars specifically ordered in Viola Metallizzato with a white leather interior. The car was then acquired by the royal family of Kuwait who painted it yellow, but the current owner Simon Kidston restored it to its original violet-white color combination.

This is the first time Pebble Beach is hosting the Concours since the pandemic. Last year's Car week was canceled altogether.

"It was very disappointing last year, so there's been just a lot of pent-up excitement," Jeff Meckler said, who came to the Concours with his wife, Eva. We've got people from out of town that are just all over all over the world have come in to see this."

Jeff and Eva are residents of Pebble Beach. They've been attending the Concours for 20 years now. They say more and more people have been showing up over time.

"You can stand on any corner here and the cars that come by are just fabulous," Eva Meckler said. "Everybody brings their best cars here to drive around and they're just wonderful."
