Supporters of Maddy Middleton rally outside courthouse

Some family and friends didn’t want to face the teenager charged in the death of Maddy Middleton at his arraignment. Instead they chose to remember the 8-year-old Santa Cruz girl outside the courthouse Monday morning

“She was beautiful, loving and now she’s gone,” said Maddy’s father, Michael Middleton.

Middleton was joined by his family and friends outside the courthouse with signs and posters showing their love for the girl. Many had turned out to search for the girl when she’d first gone missing in July and were later shocked to learn the suspect in her death was her 15-year-old neighbor.

“We hoped none of this would have happened, and it’s unfortunate it’s really unfortunate for both families,” said Middleton.

“That’s a disgrace to have lost two. Would you want a piece of crap rolling around your society? Would you want your kids outside? Absolutely not, you didn’t lose one, God got rid of a devil out here,” said family friend, Miguel Medina.

But the family doesn’t want to focus on the tragedy of Maddy’s death but more so on how much love she spread in her 8 years on this earth. Her father said he’s thankful for all the community support and love shown during such trying times.

“Hopefully it continues to be a positive thing. Hopefully people will find love and compassion and forgiveness in all this,” said Middleton.

People will have their chance to celebrate her life on October 5, the official Madyson Middleton day in Santa Cruz.
