McAbee Beach back open after sewage spill

UPDATE 7:47 p.m.: McAbee Beach is back open after a sewage spill last week.

The beach was re-opened on Friday July 17 th .

The spill came from El Torito Mexican Restaurant. The restaurant will now be responsible for paying the bill for the Monterey County Health Department’s response to the spill. It is not a fine.

According to the Health Department, the restaurant will be billed for five hours of its time. The five hours includes the initial response, posting that the beach was closed, sampling the ocean water and transporting samples to the lab. It also includes time it took to prepare the Proposition 65 report.

The Monterey County Health Department closed down McAbee Beach because of a sewage spill.

Officials said the spill came from El Torito Mexican Restaurant on Cannery Row. Officials aren’t sure how much sewage spilled into the bay.

The beach will stay closed until samples show the water is safe enough for swimmers.
