California Rodeo Salinas new ad campaign

The California Rodeo Salinas is still two days away but there’s a already a lot that has been going on behind the scenes. One of those things is a new ad campaign to bring in those unfamiliar with the Rodeo.

The slogan is “California Rodeo Salinas: Home of the Original American Superhero.” On Tuesday, NewsChanel 5 met two of the local cowboys featured, the so-called “Dynamic Duo.”

Andy Holcomb wants to get the leg up on his competition at the 105th California Rodeo Salinas. That’s why he’s been practicing hard for team roping and hopes to rein in a win this week. The cowboy from San Juan Bautista is now in the spotlight as a superhero.

He’s featured with another local cowboy, Justin Farr. Last year they were approached by friends to take some pictures for the campaign.

“I was just expecting it to be in a couple pictures or something,” Farr said. “I wasn’t expecting it to go out to all the stores and be on the ways, in the flyers, the posters and what not.”

Both men understand the draw of bringing in more crowd.

“More seats, more money for the rodeo,” Holcomb said. “Better they can make it for us cowboys, you know. They get the added money from ticket revenue and getting people interested in it.”

In the meantime, they’re still adjusting from a life of peace and quiet to the spotlight.

“Lots of my friends are poking at me,” Farr explained, “Asking me if I’ve saved any women or children lately?”

And keeping their eye on the prize, knowing they have a challenge ahead of them.

“It’s definitely a unique setup there at the Salinas Rodeo,” Farr said. “Both the header and the heeler come out of the same box. And it makes it really exciting. And we have to let the steer run a long, long ways because the arena is super big so it’s really a fun rodeo to compete in.”

“It’s exciting,” Holcomb said. “That’s why we do it. That’s why we’re out here practicing so we can go and compete, you know.”

They say even if the Rodeo isn’t your thing, come out anyway because there are other attractions to enjoy.
