PG&E project closes parts of Mission Street until October

A major gas pipeline project has just started in one of the busiest areas of Santa Cruz. Mission Street is a main thoroughfare for the area and the work under ground is being done in the middle of the day.

On Tuesday, NewsChannel 5 spoke with businesses in the area that aren’t too happy about the noise.

“It’s very noisy and I think that they should do the most noisy, high noise maybe at night,” Karla Brown said, owner of Cali Barber Shop

Pacific Gas & Electric said its crews will be working on Mission Street from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every day of the week. The project will replace 18 hundred feet of natural gas line for enhanced safety.

Crew members are doing one lane traffic control on Mission Street from Emmett Street to Center Street.

“It was very slow today, because you have to wait a long time for the traffic in both directions,” Brown said.

When brown found out the completion date for the project, she was blown away.

“Until October! Well like I say, they should work night and day to get done,” Brown said.

The project will eventually move east on Mission towards North Pacific Avenue and then along Pacific to Bulkhead Street.

“I think it’s not fair, but yeah we have to face we have to understand the situation and if it’s for the good of the city we should do, let that happen,” Brown said.
