Quick acting residents help stop Santa Cruz home invasion

Two residents helped prevent a home invasion in Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Police responded to a call for a residential burglary on Broadway Street, where a man was trying to get into a home.

Zachary Torres, a 22-year-old transient, attempted to get inside the home and was beating a metal screen door of the residence.

Police say one resident called the 9-1-1 while the other forced Torres away with a wooden practice sword. Torres smashed a clay pot and threw a shard through a window, injuring one of the residents.

Torres was chased away from the property by police and a canine unit and arrested.

He was booked on multiple charges including resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon, threats, vandalism, disorderly conduct, and burglary.
