UPDATE: Entangled whale spotted Monday morning by Coast Guard volunteers

UPDATE 6/22/15 11:48 a.m.: The whale entanglement team believes the whale its currently trying to help, is the same whale spotted last week just north of the Santa Cruz Harbor area. That belief is based on the entanglement description. A team was sent out then but wasn’t able to re-spot the whale at that time.

Rescuers are asking for the public’s help in locating the whale. Anyone who has seen the whale is asked to call the U.S. Coast Guard immediately at 831-647-7300 or 877-SOS-WHALE (877-767-9425) or go to http://www.marinelifestudies.org/ or http://www.marinelifestudies.org/index.php/whale-entanglement-team-wet.html

Team members believe the whale has two yellow buoys floating near the area of its head, at least one line wrapped around the body and one white buoy floating near the tail area.

The team deployed for a recon mission Monday because it was believed the whale was spotted again earlier in the morning.

UPDATE 6/22/15 10:37a.m.: The Whale Entanglement Team with Marine Life Studies have launched a recon mission to see if they can spot the whale again Monday. Coast Guard crews say the whale was seen Sunday just before noon by the Coast Guard Axillary volunteers who were out on the water.

The Coast Guard believes the whale will be in a triangular pattern between Moss Landing, Santa Cruz Harbor, and nine miles off shore.

Rescue crews say it may be too dangerous and a rescue would be unsuccessful Monday because of the small craft advisory that is in effect.

PREVIOUS STORY: Monday morning the Coast Guard has been putting out warning calls to all mariners who may be on the bay in the Santa Cruz area to be on the look out for an entangled whale.

The Coast Guard is reporting the whale is just south of the Santa Cruz harbor and east of a buoy that is straight out from the harbor mouth. Coast Guard is advising boaters in the area to beware and avoid the whale. The whale is reported to be caught in some type of netting.

We have a crew on the way, this story will be updated.
