UPDATE: Monterey homeless man stabbed to death identified by Sheriff’s Office

UPDATE 6/22/2015 12:34 p.m.: The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of the man who was stabbed to death behind the Monterey Public Library early Friday morning.

The coroner’s unit said Scott Mendez Long, 40, was homeless and had been living in Monterey for at least ten years. Investigators said they’ve been unable to identify any of Long’s family members and he previously lived in Illinois.

Anyone with information on his family is asked to call the coroner’s office at 831-755-3792.

UPDATE 6/20/2015: Monterey police arrested a suspect wanted for killing a 40-year-old man in Monterey Friday evening.

Monterey County deputies spotted Jesse Quiming, 32, hiding in bushes along Highway 1 near Ocean Avenue Friday night.

He was booked into the Monterey County Jail facing homicide and attempted homicide charges. His bail is set at $1.5 million.

UPDATE 6/19/2015 3:58 p.m.: Monterey Police said investigators have identified the suspect being sought in a deadly stabbing early Friday morning.

Investigators said Jesse Quiming, 32, is considered to be armed and dangerous. Police are asking anyone who sees him to call 911 immediately.

PREVIOUS STORY: A 40-year-old man was murdered Friday morning after a fight between a group of homeless people just after midnight in Monterey, according to police.

Officers said the man was stabbed to death in the courtyard area behind the Monterey Public Library. A 22-year-old man was also stabbed with non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital, police said.

Officers said the fight happened after a group of homeless people had settle down for the night on Thursday in an area behind the library.

Detectives said they aren’t sure who is responsible for the stabbing and are asking the public for more information on the incident. Information can be shared by calling the Monterey Police Department at 831-646-3812.
