Police: San Jose murder suspect arrested by Monterey police

A Sacramento man accused of murdering his girlfriend in front of their 1-year-old daughter in San Jose Tuesday had been on the run from police until Saturday evening, police said.

Someone at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula recognized Andrew Butler, 25, from the news, Monterey police said. Officers located Butler at the hospital and confirmed with the San Jose Police Department that he was the suspect they had been looking for.

Officers from SJPD came down, picked up Butler and booked him in jail in San Jose. Butler did not resist arrest, according to Monterey police.

On Tuesday, SJPD officers found Kendra Gonzales laying in the street on the 1300 block of S Bascom Avenue in San Jose. She died from at least one gunshot wound, police said.

After further investigation officers discovered Gonzales had been driving the car when she and Butler got into an argument. Police said Butler shot and killed Gonzales.

Butler then removed Gonzales’ body from the car, and ordered the other two passengers in the back seat to get out and take his daughter with them, police said.

The car was later found deserted in Salinas and was seized for evidence, police said.
