Wildfire prevention grazing sheep return to Fort Ord
More than a thousand lambs are back to work on the Fort Ord National Monument and next month the Bureau of Land Management is honoring them with “Sheep Appreciation Day.”
The event will be held on Saturday, April 4, at 9 a.m.
The BLM said 1,300 ewes and their lambs are a part of a grazing program designed to improve conditions on the land. Monument managers said they have a proven track record of reducing wildfire hazards and stimulating plant life.
The sheep will graze on Fort Ord for the next three months. Managers are also reminding visitors to be careful around the sheep and to keep a close eye on pets.
