Keeping teens away from gang violence
a developing story to begin with tonight… one person has been taken to the hospital after being shot in east salinas. thank you for joining us. i’m jon brent. this makes at least 13 shootings in salinas since the beginning of the year… it happened on the 11 hundred block of del monte avenue just after 7 p-m. police say the victim was hit somewhere on his lower body. the victim was working on a car in the garage of an apartment complex when shooting ocurred. *suspect fired multiple rounds at him and then fled, we don’t know which direction at this point.* police don’t have any suspect information and they aren’t sure yet if the shooting is gang related. police are asking for help in this case. taking back our kids from the gangs…could be as simple as giving teens more activities. that’s the message from a group speaking up at salinas city hall tonight. residents are also sharing their opinions on what the city should focus on to improve life in salinas. newschannel 5’s marissa schwartz is live in salinas tonight… and marissa you spoke to a group of young adults who say kids need more resources to keep them away from violence… tonight i met a couple of very passionate young people who say soon they’ll be able to use the top floor of this building to create art. it’s all part of a mentoring program and the people behind it, think the city direct money toward these kinds of activities, rather than adding officers on the streets and in schools. :01-:10:11-:21:58-1:05 ——take pkg——-“we don’t need more cops in schools like people were bringing up. we don’t need that because what are you trying to bring? make us scared of cops when they’re supposed to be protecting us? i don’t think that’s right.” prevention and intervention are top of mind for residents in salinas who decided to speak at monday night’s public discussion on “envisioning salinas”.nats”we can’t jus start throwing money at the problem.” for some who stepped up to speak out, gang-violence is the problem and many say they’re concerned the city is too focused on spending money on police.”they want a bigger investment from the city. they want to see more community centers where they can do art they can do music or theater.” while the salinas police department continues to run understaffed, many residents want to make sure the majority of the money goes toward enforcement.nats”its just scary to me and it seems like just like in schools you have the adult to child ratio and meet the bare minimum legally.” city leaders say the money set to come in from measure g this summer, will be directed mostly toward police and fire. but mentor juan carlo-gonzalez says programs like the urban arts collective will do more.he says they get funding through the california endowment of building healthy communities. artists like charlie cortes say teachers also need to listen better to their students needs. “they need to be
