Salinas Police are working on body camera policy

Salinas Police Chief Kelley McMillin says they are working out the details for a body camera policy.

Early last month, the department announced funding for the cameras.

Chief McMillin says they are trying to balance the need for transparency with the privacy rights of those being recorded and the rights of police officers.

“I like it to be ironed out tomorrow and have them on the streets because I’m an impatient guy and I think this is important; but I’m not going to rush the process and make bad decisions and bad policy before these things hit the streets,” said McMillin.

Chief McMillin says they have chosen a vendor, but he could not give a specific date for when they will be finished with the policy.
