Nearly 2 years later and a Salinas man has been sentenced for the shooting death of a 21 year old Olajuwon Milligan. Milligan died in the arms of this girlfriend.
22 year old Jaime Murillo of Salinas was sentence to 57 years to life for the killing. Murillo was convicted of first degree murder, use of a firearm and gang enhancement in the shooting death of Milligan.
Around 2:30 p.m on the afternoon of March 14, 2013 Murillo exchanged words with Milligan near the corner of Mae and Moreno Drive in Salinas. When Milligan and his girlfriend tried to leave to defuse the situation, Murillo followed them and shot Milligan multiple times in the neck, chest, head and back.
Olajuwon Milligan had been a promising musician, was loved by his close friends and family and was well liked by his many other friends. His birthday of December 31 was memorialized by friends and family on Facebook with many tributes to his musical talent and caring nature.
Prior to his murder trial Murillo plead guilty to possessing an illegal firearm on April 2, 2013 as well as to a gang enhancement for that charge. Murillo was sentenced for the maximum both cases.
The judge told Murillo that he had impacted many lives by his ill-conceived quest for the respect of his fellow gang members. Additionally the judge pointed out that sneaking up on an unsuspecting victim and shooting him in the back would not earn Murillo respect from anyone. She further cited his lack of remorse and his juvenile record and gang activity in imposing the maximum sentence.
