Russell Road family cost of flooding damage in the hundreds of thousands of dollars

The fence is still down and mud lines the outside of the Hansen’s home on Russell Road. It’s a constant reminder of the massive floods two weeks ago.

“We’re going on our fifth year living here and we’ve never seen anything like this,” said Brandon Hansen, who lives there with his wife and two children.

On Christmas Eve, the cost of the damage sunk in for Hansen.

“The clean up is going to be very expensive,” he said. “They have to bring a Hazmat crew out here to remove the asbestos and decontamination. It’s going to be up in the $20,000 range.”

Not to mention what it will set his family back in ripping the floors up and re-doing the entire interior.

“It’s pretty severe,” said Samuel Simpson, a contractor hired by the family. He said it could be as severe as $200,000.

“It’s going to be three and a half to four months that they may be without their house,” Simpson said.

In the meantime, the family has moved in with Hansen’s parents in Prunedale.

Hansen said rebuilding his place remains a top priority with crews set to start working next week.

“We’re planning on doing Christmas here at our house eventually but not this year,” he said.

This is not what the Hansens were hoping to deal with this holiday season but Brandon Hansen said his his kids are getting to spend quality time with their grandparents.

“We’ve been able to take something bad and at least find good in it,” he said.

The family said they have flood insurance but it doesn’t cover everything so a friend of their’s started a “go-fund-me” account.
