North end of Moss Landing Road closed due to erosion

Monterey County Public Works has closed part of Moss Landing Road from Highway 1 to Sandholdt Road indefinitely Friday.

The closure started at about 9:30a.m. when public works got a call about three leaking culverts that run under Moss Landing Road. The land bridge separates the Moss Landing harbor and Moro Cojo Slough. Work was already being done to repair the tide gates in the past month in the same area.

Crews say water found a way around the culverts and is flowing through soil underneath the road, causing erosion and instability.

A contractor was called in Friday morning to excavate the road and check the extent of the damage. Public Works says it is unable to estimate how long it will take to repair, but say it could take days or weeks.

The erosion is said to be caused by changing tides.

Crews are also being careful not to damage the utility lines that run underneath the road.

Traffic going to moss landing will be detoured to the southern end of Moss Landing Road.

Access to businesses are still available.
